Sigma Chapter Presented with 1998
Connecticut Higher Education Community Service Award

Middletown - In May 1998, the Sigma Chapter, Wesleyan University, of La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Inc. was awarded the Connecticut Higher Education Community Service Award for its mentorship program at Middletown High School. Each year the State of Connecticut Department of Higher Education recognizes the outstanding service and leadership of a college-based organization as demonstrated by a community service initiative.

Sigma Chapter was applauded for their mentorship program that they created in collaboration with Alianza Latina, a Latino student group at Middletown High School. The program boasts one-on-one interaction between University students and high school participants who engage in tutoring sessions and group activities once a week. In part, the program is designed to encourage high school students to pursue higher education, through a series of college counseling sessions and trips to Wesleyan University’s campus to give participants a glimpse of college life. In addition to the mentorship project, Sigma Chapter was further involved in helping to increase the representation of Latinos and other underrepresented groups within higher education. They hosted college workshops throughout the year for high school students, focusing on helping participants with the college application process, from personal essays to financial aid.

Since it was founded and chartered at Cornell University in 1982, La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Inc. has been committed to enhancing the quality of life of all Latinos, as well as other historically underrepresented groups. In a multi-tiered approach which seeks to address: contemporary issues of higher education, the importance of exploring and propagating the richness of Latino culture, community service, and creating professional networks, La Unidad Latina continues onward into the next millennium in service of the Latino community.
