| Washington, DC - Civic and community organizations across the nation have made their voices heard by the millions and among those voices are the Hermanos of La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda, Fraternity, Inc. On April 10th and May 1st, La Unidad Latina joins these efforts for promoting immigration reform. The Mid-Atlantic region of La Unidad Latina marched with the National Capital Immigration Coalition (CARECEN, La Clínica del Pueblo, Latino Economic Development, Neighbors' Consejo, Latino Economic Development Corp.) Over 30 Hermanos participated and were a visible presence wearing gold shirts and sweaters. Among the key Hermanos coordinating efforts among these groups was Hermano Elmer Campos. Hermanos in other parts of the country were key contributors in the coordination efforts as well. Hermano Luis Mariscal was very involved in the local demonstrations within the Los Angeles Region. He had this to say regarding the government’s response to immigration rights: “I don't think that any of their solutions address the actual problem, [their efforts] are merely ways for politicians to make themselves look good to the public at-large so that they can ‘proudly’ comment, ‘I have been addressing this issue!’” More Information about La Unidad Latina’s mobilization efforts on April 10th can be found on the LUL Mid-Atlantic website: http://www.launidadlatina.org/mid-atlantic/rally/ The website contains video news coverage, press photos, and publications. Once again, the La Unidad Latina Mid-Atlantic region is supporting the National Capital Immigration Coalition on May 1st. “People need to realize and acknowledge the contribution of our people by passing fair immigration reform legislation.”, replies Hermano Juan Sempertegui regarding LUL’s participation. May 1st is Immigrant Solidarity Day in which groups across the country will join and participate in gatherings with neighbors, friends, local politicians, community leaders, religious, labor and social service organizations to discuss important issues such as workers rights, immigration, citizenship and more. La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Incorporated was established on February 19, 1982 in order to address the shortcomings of academic institutions in meeting and addressing the needs of Latino students in higher education. The Mid-Atlantic Region is composed of La Unidad Latina chapters at the University of Maryland, The Johns Hopkins University, The Georgetown University, The George Washington University, American University, George Mason University, University of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, James Madison University, Duke University and Washington D.C. metro area alumni.
