Tampa, FL - February 2010
The Elite Hermanos of La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity Inc. at the University of South Florida were devastated when we heard about the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12, 2010. We saw a need for leadership and action, and quickly came up with a plan to raise money for those in need. The plan was to partner with as many organizations on campus as possible, and have a social to raise money for Haiti earthquake relief. The Dominican-American Student Association, Sigma Lambda Gamma, Lambda Theta Alpha, Alpha Kappa Psi, Bulls Aid, The American Red Cross, and Club Creole all came together with Lambda Upsilon Lambda to step up to the challenge, and the "Sak Pase” fundraiser was created. The partnership did not only bring students together, but it also allowed the group to reach a higher population of students, making this event successful. Sak Pase was full of music and food in the spirit of Haiti. Tampa’s own DJ Valentino and DJ Shadow provided the music, while Five Star pizza donated ten pizza pies to the event for students to enjoy. A moment of silence also took place during the event. Many students came and donated canned goods, medical supplies, and money. As a group we set a goal to raise $500 by the end of the night. When the music stopped we had raised $783.00 and lots of canned goods. The can goods were donated to the Red Cross, and an even $800 on behalf of the USF community was donated to Lambda Upsilon Lambda’s Haiti Earthquake Relief Effort, a partnership with Direct Relief International.
Direct Relief’s partners in Haiti include Partners in Health, St. Damien Children’s Hospital, the Visitation Hospital, Christian Aid Ministries, and Feed the Children. St. Damien and Partners in Health are particularly active in emergency response and have received pre-positioned materials for hurricane season, which ended November 30, and are designed to support ongoing patient care if needed. Since 2000, Direct Relief has provided more than $60 million in medical material aid to Haiti.
