Students discuss sex and other topics

Ten minutes were given to anonymously write any question of your choice. Twenty-four chairs of the opposite sex were facing you; finally the questions were being answered.

"Air it Out" was hosted by the brothers of La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity Inc., and the ladies Of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority Inc. It has been successfully done at other universities, including New York University, St. John's University and other chapters at William Paterson University.

The objective of the event was to vent and have discussions on topics such as sex, relationships and other challenges ranging from family life to academic work -issues that the everyday college student faces.

"We need to vent; we need to be able to hear answers. It's like an 'in' in the life of a girl," said Victor Alemany, La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity Inc. member and student.

This event gave both sexes a chance to ask questions anonymously and receive blunt answers from their opposite sex.

The crowd was in an uproar when one index card read, "Why is it considered gay for a male to hold another males hand, and females do it all the time?"

A male student admitted to writing it and the male side of the room got very loud. Female students thought the statement was odd as well. The male student that posed the question clarified he was straight, but thought it was sad that religiously and socially, this is the way it is.

The rest of the crowd then calmed down and realized his point.

Vanya Arista, member of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority Inc. said, "I feel that even though it was our first time hosting such an event, by the looks of how well it turned out, the next time it will most likely attract a larger crowd."

The fraternity and sorority now know how fun, controversial and deep the discussions can get.

Alemany said, "The turnout of the event was a complete success. We look forward to having another event like this one."

Six sorority members and three fraternity members attended this event. Not only were members of the sorority and fraternity there, but students from all around campus came. About 50 people attended and participated in the event.

Most of the students agreed that they would participate in another event such as this. It was informative and fun. "Air it Out" was the successful realization of an open forum for students of opposite sexes. Students will now be better prepared with questions and will also feel more comfortable in future mixed-gender situations.
