Effective February 1, 2006, La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Inc and Lambda Pi Upsilon Sorority, Latinas Poderosas Unidas, Inc. collectively strive for the academic inclination of all people, especially those lacking economic, physical, or social advantages. In the devotion of our intellectual and physical resources, we will effectively address the causes of poverty and social injustice and establish efficient solutions.
With the guidance of Principal Ramon Gonzalez, we are uniting to enlighten and promote the necessity of education to our disadvantaged youth of MS 223: Laboratory School of Finance & Technology in the South Bronx. Through this partnership, we can turn what has been deemed “one of New York City’s worst school districts” into a reputable one, by exhausting the resources of the school, but mainly those of our organizations and its constituencies.
Phase I – Hands On A month-long book drive will be conducted by the undergraduate chapters of our organizations (NYU, Columbia, St. John’s, Pace, Stony Brook, C.W. Post, Fordham) jointly soliciting Spanish and English literature catering to middle school children (6th grade). The undergraduate chapters are strongly encouraged to form partnerships with peer organizations, faculty and administrative departments to enhance the success of this initiative. Please use all public resources available at your respective campus to ensure proper publication of this worthy cause.
* Please note that each organization will operate the book drive alone if both organizations do not exist at the same university.
Phase II – Fundraising We strongly request the participation of our esteemed alumni and community partners to assist in our mission and reach our tangible goal of 1,000 books per classroom. The program directors will be responsible for alumni outreach and overall success of the initiative. Alumni members and community partners may participate in two capacities:
Contact the program director(s) or named university representatives in order to schedule a drop-off.
Make a charitable online contribution to MS 223’s General Fund. Your pledge will allow for the continuation of a quality education these students deserve. These contributions will fund educational trips, activities and materials necessary for academic success!
