May 27th 2000 is an important date in the history of La Unidad
Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity Incorporated. This date marks
the establishment of the first Undergraduate Chapter of this organization
outside of the East Coast hub. Thus, the Alpha Zeta Chapter of La Unidad
Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity Incorporated serves as the undergraduate
representative of the principles and expectations of the organization
as whole in the Midwest.
The University of Chicago, DePaul University, Columbia College, and
Loyola University Chicago are situated at different poles within the
city of Chicago. As Latinos in institutions of higher learning, there
is a need to find a niche where one can be accepted for differences
in ideology and personal constitution. Fully aware of other organizations
and their potential, there was a sentiment amongst the gentlemen that
the needs of Latinos on the campuses were not being met--being in the
representation and recruitment of minority faculty and students to the
overwhelming problem of retention. With time and continued research,
it became apparent that La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity
Incorporated was the best means of combating these issues on the campuses
and throughout the city of Chicago.
Initial contact was immediately made with the Hermanos from the Gamma
Zeta Chapter. With Hermanos from Alpha Gamma and other fraternal chapters,
the Alpha Zeta Chapter was established and the Hermanos prepared for
all responsibilities that entail maintaining the successful objectives
and goals of this premier organization.
April 7th is significant in our short history since this is the date
our chapter expanded to the campuses of Columbia College and Loyola
University Chicago with the crossing of our Beta Line. Together, as
a centralized, functioning unit--we, the Hermanos of the Alpha Zeta
Chapter of La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity Incorporated
will succeed in all that we embark upon.
