Alpha Beta Chapter History

Hermano Jamie P. Arroyo, and two friends sparked the original interest of bringing La Fraternidad to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, during the summer of 1996. One of which was the brother of an Hermano of La Fraternidad. They felt that Latino men were the most disjointed segment of the student of color population at the University of Massachusetts. Although there was a considerable number of Latino men on campus, the number seemed much smaller as a result of the inactivity on campus and the high drop out rate. At that time and still today, Latino men are unfairly viewed by society as underachievers. Men for whom people have lost hope. The dream of these Latino men together under one banner was born that summer day.
The concept of a Latino fraternity became very intriguing. A fraternity would inspire brotherhood among Latinos, and perhaps spark activity, which would foster a positive image for the very men who seemed so invisible at this University. The idea of making an organization consisting mainly of Latino men whose focus would be on community service, academics, and social events seemed like a promising option. Issues such as the recruitment and retention of Latino men at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst were important, and they felt a Latino based fraternity provided a means to address them. In the summer of 1996, the three initial interested men met with members of the National Council of La Unidad Latina.

In the fall of 1997, through a mutual friend, an informational was arranged on the campus of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Two months and three meetings later, an interest group of 11 men was formed. 8 men submitted their applications, with a thirst for the brotherhood and respect. They acknowledged the needs for a positive community service based organization on their campus. In this interest group, the seeds of Alpha Beta were sewn.

On January 27, 1998 at 10:48:15 PM four men took the oath of La Fraternidad. The seed sewn by the interested men a few months before now began to grow, watered by Hermanos and Caballeros.

At 12:45 AM on April 12, 1998, the Alpha Beta Chapter of La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity Inc. was born at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. On this date, three men earned the title of Hermano de La Fraternidad. They are (in line order) Hermano Jamie Philip Arroyo, Hermano Merlin Jeshua Calo, and Hermano Westley Gilberto Pereira. That April night will forever be one of the most important in their lives.

National Fraternity History

La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Incorporated was established on Friday, February 19, 1982 at the prestigious Ivy League institution that is Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Our organization was founded by 13 visionaries that sought to revolutionize society for the prosperity of Latinos, and humanity as a whole. Realizing strength in numbers and the power of uniformed voice, La Unidad Latina’s primary objective was to address the inadequacies of academic institutions in meeting and addressing the necessities of minority students to succeed in higher education. Since that glorious day in 1982, we have successfully created a formal structure for the positive presence of underrepresented groups at institutions of higher leaning across the nation. La Hermandad functions socially in a unique and positive manner, providing an atmosphere in which each Hermano can be himself and share his experiences. Most notably, in creating a sentiment of family, every Hermano has a place that he can truly call home, and a place where he will be respected and supported in all endeavors. La Unidad Latina continually redefines the concept of brotherhood. La Fraternidad promotes intellectual, cultural, and academic strength in its members in order to prepare them for lives as both leaders and team members, in their communities and worldwide.
